Idea written by Isa: I would like to go on holidays to Bali but away from the polluted touristy spots. Can you give me some ideas?

I went to Kuta but was very disappointed as there were too many Australians there, and the beaches were polluted with raw sewerage. I would like to experience another side of Indonesia if possible. What do you recommend?

Ubud, or try Lombok, which is a neighboring island to Bali.

Like you I like to get away from the crowds, particularly Kuta.

I travel to Bali regularly and always go to Ubud first for about 3 days and then to Nusa Dua where you are in a quiet area with good beaches.

Google both areas

Do you want to concentrate on exploring Bali or do you want to “experience another side of Indonesia”?

Indonesia is a vast archipelago so it’s impossible to list all the great destinations in here. But since you mention a Balinese beach in your question, I will try focusing on Bali and beaches in general.

Bali:

- Nusa Dua : more popular among families and couples. A lot cleaner and safer and more peaceful than Kuta. It’s not for surfing though, it’s more for relaxation, honeymoon, sunset watching, wedding, swimming, turtle watching, and water sports that do not require big waves, such as banana boat, waterski, jetski.

- Tanjung Benoa: the shoreline is a continuation of Nusa Dua, so similar concepts apply.

- Dreamland : around 30 mins from Kuta.

- Tulamben : around 125 km in the northeast of Denpasar.

- Lovina : northern Bali, in Buleleng region. The main attraction is dolphins.

Other sea spots:

- Palabuhanratu, West Java : black sand. Huge waves. My high school teachers (expats from US and Canada) love to surf here.

- Raja Ampat, Papua : 5-star diving site. Very very popular especially recently.

- The Gili’s, West Nusa Tenggara : Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air are small islands in the region of Lombok. A perfect place if you want to experience life without motor vehicles. Either walk, bike, or ride in a cidomo (traditional horse cart).

- Karimunjawa, Central Java : A group of small islands in the north of Central Java. Simply stunning.

- Bunaken, North Sulawesi : A classic. Every Indonesian school kid knows Bunaken. Mainly a diving spot, but the beaches are beautifully pristine too!

- The Pink Beach, Komodo Island, East Nusa Tenggara : The sand is… well, pink, which makes it a unique beach. Plus, there are live Komodo dragons in their natural habitat.

- Kepulauan Seribu (lit. “thousand islands”), Jakarta : If you’ve ever been to Jakarta before, you probably never expected to see stunning, uncorrupted small islands that belong to the capital region. But that’s what Kepulauan Seribu is all about.

Well that’s all I can think of. Hope that helps.
