The name “Indonesia” comes from the Latin word “Indus” which means Indian, and the Greek word “nesos” which means island. So I guess you could call it “Indian Islands” (as in its in the Indian Ocean).

Because there’s so many difference ethnic groups and cultures within Indonesia, there’s a huge variety of food. Most dishes include rice. Some of the most common dishes include NASI GORENG (fried rice which comes in many varieties) and MARTABAK (a fried omlette in crispy pastry). There are also NASI PADANG (a.k.a MASAKAN PADANG) restuarants all over Indonesia. This food is from Padang in the island of Sumatra but is popular all over Indonesia. It includes different types of fish and chicken but i think what makes it “nasi padang” is the rendang, my favourite. Rendang is large chunks of slow cooked beef with a mildly spicy sauce. Very nice!

Oh man, we eat anything and everything there is to eat! lol.

Rice is our staple food. Although, some provinces in the eastern part of Indonesia would cite sago as their staple.

Besides the “normal” food, many of us would gladly eat stuff that in the western world only appear in Fear Factor-type shows. Think animal viscera (kidneys, spinal cords, brains…), insects (termites, locusts,…), worms, you name it. Fruits… we have exotic fruits like durians, rambutans, snake fruits (locally known as “salak”), and ever-legendary nutmegs.

Spices, spices, spices! We love spices!! A meal is not a meal when it is not spiced. This explains the habit of many Indonesians, in which they eat western fast food like McD or Burger King, only to come home and eat their own food, believing that “they have not eaten”.

Oh and don’t forget that when we eat animal meat, say fish, usually it is served whole. Which means a serving of fried fish will include the head, tail, and fins of the fish, as long as the plate could accommodate. I mention this because a few American friends of mine were freaked out when they saw that their dinner could stare back at them ;p
