I believe that I saw a travel statistic recently that stated Vietnam came in first in the world as being the one country where travelers who had been one time said they would not return.

Of course, I read that the decline in tourism this year in Vietnam was attributed by officials there to the state of the world economy rather than admitting that the attitudes of people there basically suck….the decline in tourists was significant from the prior year. Something like 10%…

They seem to have developed this attitude about capitalism that it means screwing and being dishonest in business situations whereas the opposite is true for a succesful western entrepeneur or business person.”

This is exactly with information No return ? tell me what u think? that you may prefer to fix problems them selves. Perhaps you will find in several ways, creating everything far better. With the expectation with information No return ? tell me what u think? might possibly be a fix in the foreseeable future.

Well I think not all Vietnamese peoples is dishonest and I think the reason why they are being dishonest is because they have to live, they have to lie to sell stuff I know that’s a bad thing but is all because of the economies that is driving everybody crazy now.

I am Australian and have visited Vietnam on 6 separate occasions. I am going back again soon. I know of about a dozen other aussies in my town who like me, love the place and keep going back. I only know of one aussie in my town that does not intend to return.

During my visits, I have came in contact with lots of other foreigners and did find that a significant percentage of the French people I encountered were repeat visitors.

I encountered Americans and Canadians who largely indicated they would not go back again.

I believe that it is perhaps a cultural thing. That is to say that people from one culture find Vietnam more favourable than other cultures see it.

I found the attitudes of the Vietnamese wonderful, kind and sharing. In speaking in depth with some I can now call friends, they indicate they generally do not like US people.

While I have made observations, this is only as a generalization and not reflective against all US people. I have heard a lot of US people in Vietnam in conversation with others refer to the Vietnamese as g00ks. This is heard by Vietnamese people just as easily as I have heard it said, so I can see where the Vietnamese might develop negative attitudes toward US people, and subsequently, a US person might find Vietnamese less welcoming than they are for Australians. Bare in mind the carpet bombing leaving behind tens of thousand of unexploded devices, and the broad poisoning of the earth with agent orange. US assistance in removing the unexploded devices is minimal and the US denies agent orange as a a current problem. People of Vietnam will bare this in mind and this can shape their attitudes about US people they encounter.

Another poster referring to Vietnamese as the Jews of Asia is offensive to Jews as well. While I do agree that the many Vietnamese traders try to get as much money as they can in a sale and some individuals like taxi drivers will sometimes scam tourists, the “money hungry” attitude is nowhere near as bad as I have encountered with the Chinese or in Mexico.

Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Many in Australia today call Vietnam “the new Bali”. Since terrorist acts in Bali caused Aussies to look elsewhere for Asian holidays, Vietnam became the new destination of choice for many Australians. I know aussies who used to go to Bali frequently who now no longer go there at all, choosing to go to Vietnam instead. It is easy to understand since Vietnam now has direct flights with Australia and compared to Bali, is not only cheaper, but a whole lot safer. And the other aspect is that Vietnam offers stunning and beautiful landscapes that Bali can not provide.

The downturn in tourism in Vietnam is not unique to that country. It is really all to do with a global economy downturn. Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia and other main stream tourist destinations have all suffered a drop in numbers. Bare in mind that until the economic down turn, Vietnam was enjoying and increase of foreign visitors at a growing average rate of 15% per annum. In a particular month 2006, all Hanoi hotel rooms were occupied and so the government opened up the rail yard and was renting sleeper cabins on the train to deal with the hotel shortage.
