Answer by Rich Bottles Jr.

According to Wikipedia, “Dekker was born to missionaries who lived among the headhunter tribes of Indonesia,” but a recurring theme in his books is “the failure of religion.”

“Because of Dekker’s general distaste for Religion, in particular organized religion which often eschews the true nature of love, he often finds himself at the heart of controversy in certain conservative circles. None of his books look too kindly on American Christianity as such, but rather focus on core themes such as loving the unlovely, hope where there is none, judgmentalism, and redemption when all is lost. In this regard, he is sometimes compared to U2′s lead singer, Bono, within the world of fiction.

But it is Dekker’s dark subject matter that most irritate some traditionalists. His characters often descend into deep valleys of tremendous struggle and despair before finding hope. It’s ironic to some that Dekker’s works have been classified as “Religious” fiction, a label that he has rejected from the beginning–many of his books have nothing to do with religion. His refusal to be put in any religious box draws some fire, and yet it is this very authenticity in his work that draws millions of readers. As such he is an anomaly, often misunderstood by those traditionalists who have not taken the ride with him on stories filled with serial killers, deeply conflicted characters, death, and ultimately resounding hope and love.”

It’s weird that they have his books in your church library. I’ve always thought of him and Philip Pullman in the same category. That’s not to say you shouldn’t read it; religion has no bearing on fiction, but you have to just think of it as fiction.

Figure out far better?
