You certainly won’t get any negative feedback from me! My wife and I LOVED Bali. Here is my advice, in no particular order.
1. Don’t have anything to do with drugs. Don’t take any weed, or anything that has had weed in it. Indonesia steps on drugs and crime. It against the law to have drugs, and against the law not to tell the cops if someone in your group has dope. If one moron in your group has any, you could all end up in jail.
2. If you buy a sarong, make sure you learn how to tie it! Mine fell off, right in front of the hotel.
3. It is VERY HOT and humid in Bali–after all Kuta is at sea level and almost on the Equator. Dress accordingly. Most of the people are Hindus not Muslims, so they aren’t as strict about shorts and bare arms and that. The Muslims are moderate, and provided you are at least somewhat respectful of them–no skimpy clothing on the street or public drunkeness–they will be a warm and hospitable people.
4. Breakfast is likely to be a HUGE buffet–western style eggs and bacon etc–plus lovely fruit and juice. Try fruit you have never tried before, it is WONDERFUL. I especially recommend dragon fruit–red and green skin and the fruit is grey with black seeds– and durian (smells fit to wake the dead, but tastes really nice) You will find that you will really chow down the first day or two, and then (because of the heat) not want to have heavy meals anymore.
5. Beware of overpriced massages on the beach. I ask you–three “Miss Bali” candidates working a guy over for half an hour, and they have the nerve to charge 4USD! Four bucks! Mind you, that was between them–not each.
6. If you are going via Singapore or Hong Kong, try to lengthen your stopoever there–if it’s not too late. Both places are wonderful.
7. You seem to be taking lots of money. ATM cards work anyway.
8. You’ve got the vaccinations you need. Be prepared that you might get sick anyway–just the simple fact of different bacteria to which your body is not accustomed.
9. “Helpful” porters will take your suitcase for you at the airport–and expect to be paid. Decline.
10. Travel light. You ‘ll be beat when your arrive, and the last thing you’ll need is a bunch of heavy suitcases. if this is your first trip you will probably take three times as much stuff as you need anyway. Whittle it down.
11. Try to learn a few words of the language before you go. Pay attention especially to the word “dilarang”–it means “forbidden”–as is “dilarang masuk’ (do not enter).
12. If this is your first trip to Asia, you might find that it will change you for the rest of your life. We went to Bali, as our first Asian trip, and now we live in Taiwan and travel around Asia as much as we can. We have been to Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, China. Bali is on the list of places to which we want to return.
13. The local liquor is a kind of palm whiskey called “arak”. Take it easy–it’ll take the chrome off a bumper and in the heat a lot of newcomers overdrink. The local brand of beer is “Bintang”. Good stuff–like Mexican Corona.
14. Eat and drink the local stuff. Anything imported costs the moon.
I’m envious! You’ll have a blast.
Email me for more details. Bali is wonderful, and you have made a good choice.
Acknowledge much better?
